Summer Health Discovery Program Participants
Throughout the program, students gained valuable hands-on exposure to healthcare in a rural critical access hospital setting. They participated in learning experiences focused on health literacy, rural healthcare access, and the wide variety of career opportunities available within the healthcare industry. By working alongside healthcare professionals, students developed a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of serving patients in rural communities.
A highlight of the program was the opportunity for students to visit several leading educational institutions throughout Louisiana. Participants toured Southern University's School of Nursing, explored the campus, and enjoyed lunch with the Chancellor while learning about pathways into nursing and healthcare leadership. Students also traveled to Delgado Community College's Allied Health Campus in New Orleans and visited River Parishes Community College, where they gained firsthand insight into allied health programs and career preparation opportunities.
This year also featured an exciting new experience. Students traveled aboard the Mardi Gras Express to Mobile, Alabama, where they participated in a healthcare immersion experience with one of the oldest health systems in the United States. The visit provided a unique perspective on healthcare delivery, innovation, and the history of medicine.
To conclude the program, students collaborated on a three-week capstone project titled "Expanding Healthcare in Rural Areas." Through research, discussion, and teamwork, participants developed ideas and solutions aimed at improving healthcare access for underserved communities, demonstrating both creativity and a passion for service.
The success of the Summer Health Discovery Program would not have been possible without the dedication and support of many individuals. We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Lewis, Dr. Buggage, our amazing Auxiliary Staff, Ms. Wanda August, and our dedicated West Ascension Parish Hospital Heroes who generously shared their time, expertise, and encouragement with our students throughout the summer.
Special Thanks to our State Representative Ken Brass for believing in our students and providing the resources for this program.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of this year's participants, we remain committed to inspiring future healthcare professionals and strengthening the healthcare workforce in the communities we serve. We look forward to seeing what these talented young leaders accomplish in the years ahead.
