Facility and Safety Policies
Safety, visitor conduct, campus restrictions, and workplace violence prevention.
Safe Haven for Babies
Safe Haven Overview
West Ascension Parish Hospital is designated a Safe Haven for Babies under Louisiana's Safe Haven Law. This law allows parents in crisis to legally and safely relinquish their newborn (up to 60 days old) at our hospital without fear of prosecution, as long as the baby is unharmed. The hospital will ensure that the infant receives immediate medical care and is placed in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services for adoption or foster care placement. Our priority is to provide a safe, confidential, and judgment-free environment for parents who may feel overwhelmed and unable to care for their newborn. If you or someone you know is considering this option, hospital staff are available 24/7 to assist.
No Firearms Policy
Campus Firearms Restriction
For the safety and security of our patients, staff, and visitors, West Ascension Parish Hospital strictly prohibits firearms and other weapons on hospital property. This policy applies to all individuals, including patients, visitors, and employees, regardless of whether they have a concealed carry permit. The presence of firearms in a healthcare setting poses a significant risk, and our goal is to maintain a secure and peaceful environment for all. Licensed law enforcement officers acting in an official capacity are exempt from this policy.
No Smoking Policy
Smoke-Free Campus
West Ascension Parish Hospital is a 100% smoke-free facility, in compliance with state and federal regulations. Smoking, vaping, and the use of any tobacco products are strictly prohibited inside the hospital, on hospital grounds, and in any affiliated buildings, including parking areas. This policy is in place to protect the health of our patients, visitors, and staff by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, which is known to cause serious health issues. Patients and visitors who need assistance with smoking cessation resources can speak to a healthcare provider for guidance on available support programs.
No Illicit Drugs or Alcohol Policy
Drug and Alcohol Restrictions
The possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol is strictly prohibited on West Ascension Parish Hospital premises. This policy is in place to maintain a safe and professional healthcare environment where all individuals receive the highest level of care without disruption. Patients who require medical treatment for substance use disorders are encouraged to seek help, and our healthcare professionals can provide information on treatment options. Anyone found in violation of this policy may be subject to removal from hospital property and, if necessary, legal action.
Zero Tolerance for Violence
Protecting Our Healthcare Team
Our hospital is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for patients, visitors, employees, medical professionals, and emergency services personnel.
Threats, intimidation, assault, and physical violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the facility, involvement of law enforcement, and criminal prosecution.
Louisiana law provides specific protections for healthcare professionals and emergency services personnel:
- Louisiana R.S. 14:38.5 prohibits assault, including statements threatening physical harm, against a healthcare professional or emergency services worker performing their duties.
- Louisiana R.S. 14:34.8 establishes criminal penalties for the intentional use of force or violence against healthcare professionals, emergency room personnel, and emergency services personnel performing their duties.
Please treat our team with the same dignity and respect you expect while receiving care. Violence and threats interfere with our ability to provide safe, timely, and effective healthcare to our community.
